Authorities will get to access encrypted messages before Christmas after Labor offered a deal with the coalition to pass the controversial laws. The opposition agreed to drop its amendments due to national security concerns around terror threats over the holiday period. Labor said its support was contingent on the government amending the new laws in February.

For clarity, this is in Australia and is in regards to messages sent via Android and iOS applications such as Whatsapp.  I'd suggest using Wickr if you a serious about keeping your correspondence private.  I personally don't use it (or any other "private messaging" services as I'm old and really don't care any more.  Dead sure ASIO already have a dossier on my and my life so it's very much a 'Whatever' for me.  If they wanted me I'd be in prison by now, heheheh.
